About Non-Medical Detox

NorthStar Transitions specializes in withdrawal management and social detox for women and men addicted to alcohol. Depending on an individual’s medical and personal history, alcohol withdrawal may include sweating and shaking, nausea, insomnia, anxiety or intense cravings lasting two to seven days after cessation. Our social detox program can help manage alcohol withdrawal symptoms during acute intoxication and when an individual has not been drinking heavily for an extended period.

Non-Medical Detox Services in Metro Denver

Non-medical, “social detox” is generally appropriate for heroin and prescription painkiller misuse. Heroin detox symptoms commonly include anxiety, sweating, extreme cravings, nausea or diarrhea and insomnia. Similarly, detox from prescribed pills like Vicodin, Percocet, Fentanyl, Dilaudid and morphine mimics these symptoms. As needed, our clinicians may prescribe medications to ease heroin withdrawal. These prescriptions include Subutex and Clonidine, used to manage drug withdrawal over a period of two to seven days.

Men and women dependent on cocaine can also undergo social detox, in most situations. Cocaine detox often comes with drug cravings, anxiety and paranoia, irritability and sleeplessness. Though uncomfortable, these symptoms typically go away within 48 hours of withdrawing from cocaine.

Methamphetamine detox symptoms include cravings for meth, anxiety and paranoia, irritability and sleeplessness. Most people dependent on meth are candidates for social detox, and withdrawal symptoms generally subside over a two-day period.

Other Detoxification Services

Detox for benzodiazepines like Klonopin, Valium and Xanax require 24-hour medical supervision. Because of the stringent guidelines surrounding the dispensing of methadone, methadone detox is not eligible for NorthStar Transitions’ non-medical program. We can work with clients requiring this type of care by recommending a medical detoxification facility or program.

After Detox: What to Expect

After completing detox, many NorthStar clients go through acute withdrawals that last longer than initial withdrawal symptoms. These “post-acute withdrawal symptoms” (PAWS) may be present for several weeks after cessation of alcohol or drugs. NorthStar clients experiencing PAWS are more susceptible to a drug or alcohol relapse, so we recommend they remain in the residential treatment setting for two to four weeks after finishing detoxification.
